Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR)
Oil-Resistant Rubber Production
The automotive, oil, and gas industries require rubber materials with superior resistance to fuels, oils, and solvents, including concentrated hydrocarbons such as gasoline or mineral oils. These industries demand rubber compounds with outstanding durability at a competitive cost.
ARLANXEO’s high-quality NBR rubbers, marketed under Perbunan® and Krynac®, are well-recognized globally. Another important market is construction, such as gaskets and sealants. NBR is also used across various other industries for example, fire-resistant cables, hoses, printing rollers, flooring, and protective footwear.
Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, offering exceptional oil resistance, heat stability, and ozone resistance up to 120°C, as well as excellent flexibility at low temperatures down to –50°C.
Faster and More Efficient Processing
In addition to its outstanding oil resistance, NBR exhibits high tensile strength and flexibility, making it highly processable in molding and extrusion operations without causing defects or deformation. Each Perbunan® grade is specifically engineered to minimize these issues, ensuring high elongation and superior performance, especially in applications involving metal adhesion and dynamic stress.
In industries like construction and machinery, Perbunan® is commonly used in seals, membranes, diaphragms, rollers, hoses, balls, belts, drive belts, and footwear soles.
ARLANXEO’s Krynac® provides even greater oil and fuel resistance, making it ideal for automotive fuel hoses, gaskets, seals, and coated fabrics. Its properties also make it suitable for use in machine and construction components, automotive interiors, and industrial parts requiring both strength and flexibility.
Similarly, both Perbunan® and Krynac® are used in high-performance applications Perbunan® for dynamic mechanical parts, and Krynac® for components exposed to high oil, fuel, and heat environments, such as hoses, seals, rollers, belts, and cable coatings.
Thermoplastic Modification with NBR Powder
NBR rubber in powder form, sold under the trade name Baymod® N, possesses excellent resistance to oils, fuels, greases, and various chemicals. Because Baymod® N can dissolve in wet-surface processes, it is widely used in the rubber industry for producing gaskets through solution-based methods.
Thermoplastics modified with Baymod® N retain their elasticity and elastomeric properties permanently, while also providing excellent impact resistance. It is especially suitable for use with soft PVC in injection molding processes, as PVC is typically a brittle material that requires plasticizers to enhance flexibility. Baymod® N improves the oil resistance of PVC formulations and provides a soft, rubber-like feel. A common example of PVC profiles modified with Baymod® N is automotive window seals.
