HNBR

Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR)

HNBR products from ARLANXEO, marketed under the Therban® brand, offer exceptional performance for applications requiring outstanding resistance to heat, oxidation, and various fluids. The polarity of HNBR is determined by its acrylonitrile (ACN) content. As the ACN content increases, the oil resistance also improves, resulting in excellent durability in non-polar media such as oil, fuel, lubricants, and hydrocarbons. Therefore, HNBR provides superior resistance to heat, oxidation, and chemicals, along with excellent mechanical properties.

HNBR Product Portfolio

Designed for applications requiring high durability in demanding environments, HNBR Therban® from ARLANXEO offers a wide range of excellent properties, such as superior resistance to oils and fuels and exceptional mechanical strength. It performs efficiently in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 165°C and withstands various aggressive fluids including lubricants, engine oils, diesel, and hydraulic fluids.

The hydrogenated nitrile rubber is defined by its acrylonitrile (ACN) content, ranging from 17% ACN to 44% ACN. A higher ACN level enhances oil resistance, while lower ACN grades improve flexibility and ozone resistance. In addition to standard grades, Therban® also includes special grades such as Therban® AT and Therban® LT.

Therban® AT – For Improved Processing
Developed by ARLANXEO researchers, Therban® AT combines advanced processing technology with excellent product characteristics. Through a specialized production process, this grade has been engineered to achieve low Mooney viscosity, enhancing processing efficiency during compounding and mixing.

When blended with other HNBR grades, the low Mooney viscosity of Therban® AT allows easier mixing, reduced energy consumption, and minimized processing time without sacrificing performance. This grade also helps reduce or eliminate the need for plasticizers or processing aids, enabling more efficient compounding and improved surface quality of the final product.

Thus, Therban® AT is particularly beneficial for applications requiring smooth processing, faster cycle times, and cost and energy savings while maintaining high performance and consistent quality.

Therban® LT – For Low-Temperature Applications
The acrylonitrile (ACN) content is a key factor that influences the properties of Therban® grades. As the ACN content increases, oil and fuel resistance improve, but elasticity decreases.

Therban® LT has been specifically developed for low-temperature environments. With ACN contents of 25%, 20%, and 17%, it provides excellent flexibility and elasticity even at low temperatures. It offers outstanding mechanical strength and a superior compression set performance, maintaining elasticity down to -30°C — a significant advantage in applications exposed to cold conditions.

Key Features of Therban® LT:

  • Designed for applications requiring flexibility and elasticity down to -30°C
  • Excellent resistance to oil and environmental factors
  • Hydrogenation degree above 99%
  • Residual double-bond content below 5.5%
  • Mooney viscosity ML(1+4)@100°C ranging from 39 to 80 MU
  • Outstanding long-term durability and mechanical stability

THERBAN® APPLICATIONS

Therban® has become one of the most widely used materials in the oil and gas industry, mechanical engineering, and the aerospace industry. Our research and development teams continuously expand its performance capabilities.

Seals
Therban® grades offer excellent heat and cold resistance, making them particularly suitable for seals in automotive systems and front-engine machinery. The fully hydrogenated Therban® LT 2007 provides superior compound performance and flexibility at both high and low temperatures, as well as excellent resistance to oil and fuel. It is ideal for long-term use in automotive seals and components exposed to oils and hydrocarbons.

Typical applications of Therban® in seals include:
